You might think that there is only one way to use an extinguisher on a fire, but were you aware that there is a classification system for different types of fire extinguishers? They could be labeled with the letters A, B, C, D or K, and each of those letters represents a different type of fire that they are meant for.
A is used on regular wood and wood products, B is used on gasoline and oil fires, C is for electrical fires, D is for combustible metals and K is for organic oils like those found in kitchens.
While some extinguishers might have several letters on them, you will find that in certain areas, having the wrong type of extinguisher could actually make things more dangerous.
Being aware of what type of extinguisher you have and what type of fires you might encounter will make you that much safer.
