Rust is the worst enemy of steel and iron. The process is called oxidation, and it takes water and oxygen for it to happen. Unfortunately, this is not in short supply around your home. While there usually are steps taken to protect steel and iron surfaces, something as simple as a scratch can allow water and oxygen to access the metal and start the process. Once a metal object has started developing rust, it usually makes the situation worse and you are stuck in a downward spiral.
The damage from rust can simply be cosmetic, but there are some situations where even the structural integrity of your home is at risk. For example, if you have cracked cement where water and oxygen come into contact with the rebar inside of the cement, it could break down even strong walls over time. Another danger is if you have adjustable steel columns in your home. If the protective paint that is applied to these is scratched off, they might not be able to support the weight resting on them.
