Are you an independent person or do you want other people to tell you what you can or cannot do to your home? You might quickly answer that question, but if the question was “Would you move into a neighborhood that has a Homeowners Association?” then you might not be as quick to answer.

HOA’s are more common in certain parts of the country, and their stated purpose is usually to keep a neighborhood well-maintained and uniform. Some might feel like this is a good thing, but it could turn out that you will find it restrictive in the future.

This is not the only issue that some have with HOA’s. In some areas they have the authority to do something called a non-judicial foreclosure. This gives them the right to put a home in foreclosure if the owner hasn’t paid their dues. Considering these things, it might be best to do some research before moving into an area where there is an HOA to make sure that you are not signing up for something that will end up causing you trouble.
