Windows – they really do make the house, don’t they? They add natural light to our interior, allow us to watch the rain from a comfy indoor location, make the outside of our house really stand out, let the fresh air in, and so much more. Without windows, our homes would feel a lot less like, well, home…
But windows, like anything else in our homes, don’t come without maintenance or issues. Windows can lead to many potential issues that we should look out for. The first thing is moisture intrusion. Usually from a lack of flashing around the windows and their frame, moisture damage can happen for many years without being noticed. If you have any soft or unseen spots around your windows, have them checked out by a qualified contractor immediately.
Window seals can also deteriorate, allowing moisture to develop between the layers of glass on insulated windows. A common issue, but one that is not as well known, is also with Low-E windows. These windows are common in many homes nowadays. They are energy efficient, but they reflect quite a bit of the sun’s rays – and even intensifies them. This can cause melted siding and other issues from the intense heat.
With all their faults though, windows are still one of the best parts of a home – as long as they are properly maintained.
